Upgrading single-glazed windows to double-glazed - it’s a popular way to renovate and add value to a property, the reason for this is manifold, firstly the benefit of heat retention, sound insulation and in many cases, monetary value too. This applies to the vast majority of renovations, this is not suitable for every property. In this article, we will dive into the drawbacks of single glazing, the conversion from single glazing to double glazing and what is best for your property.

The issue with single glazing

To begin with, we must first ask ourselves why people want to change their single glazing - let’s explore this.

Thermal inefficiencies

Because single-glazed windows compose of a mere single pane of glass, they are incredibly inefficient in a vast number of ways. Firstly, one of the most common complaints is their heat retention or lack thereof. Homes with single-glazed windows become cold in the winter and can even get too hot in the summertime too! This has a knock-on effect with higher energy costs - the heating has to blast on to stave the winter chill away. In reality, heat is escaping at a worrying rate from your home and with an uphill battle to keep it warm - that ends up taking a chunk out of your wallet as it is increasingly expensive to heat your home.

Security

On top of that, single glazing lacks security, and therefore it is quite a simple task to smash a single pane of glass and force entry into your home. This is therefore the single weakest point of entry and makes the money that you may have spent on doors and security completely pointless. Make sure your windows are secure too!

Noise pollution

A single pane of glass doesn’t do too much to keep away the noise. If you live next to a busy road, on a flight path or have pesky noisy neighbours, then it can quickly become something of a living nightmare. The solution to this is to insulate your home with double glazing. This allows you to sleep soundly at night without the screech of traffic or the blare of sirens keeping you up.

Condensation

Condensation is a common issue with windows in homes all over the country. This is the result of water vapours in the air building up on the surface at lower temperatures. This build-up of condensed water results in many unsightly water droplets forming on the windows - the worst part of it? It can contribute to dampness and mould in your home. This can not only look unpleasant but indeed, cause health issues too.

Double-glazed windows on the other hand reduce condensation due to the airtight seal between panes. This prevents it from building up, you’ll suffer less from the likes of mould and dampness and other moisture-related horrors that can come as a result.
